Letting Go of Homeschool Regrets: Trusting God with the Road Ahead

Have you ever caught yourself thinking, “I should have been more consistent this week,” or “I wasted so much time with the wrong curriculum”? Maybe you’ve wondered if your past mistakes disqualify you from having a joyful homeschooling future.

If that sounds familiar, friend, this message is for you — because nobody drives forward while staring into the rearview mirror. And more importantly, God never intended for you to stay stuck in regret. He’s calling you forward.

Forgetting What Lies Behind

In Philippians 3:13–14, Paul writes:

“But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”

Paul understood something every homeschooling parent needs to remember: you can’t move forward while constantly glancing backward. The past may hold lessons, but it’s not the place we’re meant to live.

If we’re honest, we’ve all had moments we wish we could redo — days we lost our patience, picked the wrong curriculum, or doubted our calling. But here’s the truth: your past doesn’t define your homeschool future.

My “Rearview Mirror” Moment

There was a season in my homeschooling journey when I placed far too much importance on the opinions of others — especially my parents.

Both of them were public school educators with high academic standards, and they couldn’t understand why I felt called to homeschool. Out of insecurity, I tried to prove myself. I bought every curriculum I could find, filled bookshelves with endless materials, and quickly became overwhelmed.

Then one day, the Lord gently reminded me: He’s the one who called me to homeschool, not anyone else.

It wasn’t my parents’ approval or the perfect curriculum that would make our homeschool successful — it was His guidance, His provision, and His grace.

That realization changed everything. My job wasn’t to be the perfect homeschool mom. My job was to be faithful — to show up, love my children, and trust that God would fill the gaps.

Three Reminders for Moving Forward

1. Don’t Let Past Mistakes Define You

Every homeschool parent has made mistakes. Maybe you were too rigid, too distracted, too relaxed, or too perfectionistic. Whatever it was, it doesn’t define you — and it doesn’t define your children’s future.

God’s mercies are new every single morning. That includes your homeschool mornings, too.

2. Remember That God Holds the Blueprint

Sometimes we carry unnecessary guilt, worrying that one decision might have ruined our child’s future. But friend, their destiny doesn’t rest in your hands alone.

God holds the blueprint. He designed your children with purpose and intention. He can redeem any mistake or detour. As long as you stay surrendered to Him, your homeschool story will align with His perfect plan.

3. Embrace the Road Ahead

When you drive, you glance at the rearview mirror only for context — but your focus stays on the road ahead.

The same is true for homeschooling. Learn from the past, but don’t live there. Ask yourself, “What small step can I take today to move forward?”

Here are a few simple ideas to help you look ahead:

  • Wake up a bit earlier for quiet time with the Lord.

  • Simplify your curriculum — less really can be more.

  • Laugh more, stress less, and enjoy this season with your children.

Forward momentum — no matter how small — keeps you from sliding back into regret.

A Simple Challenge

This week, take a moment to write down one thing from your homeschool past that you’ve been holding onto — maybe guilt, regret, or disappointment. Then bring it before God in prayer.

Say:“Lord, I’ve been carrying this, but I lay it at Your feet. I trust You with my homeschool future.”

Then, write down one step you’ll take forward this week. It doesn’t have to be big — just one intentional action that reminds you you’re moving forward with God’s strength and grace.

Keep Your Eyes on the Road Ahead

As Paul reminds us, “Forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”

Your homeschool journey isn’t defined by what happened yesterday. It’s defined by who God is today — and He is faithful, merciful, and ever-present.

When you stop staring at the rearview mirror and fix your eyes on Him, you’ll find peace, direction, and joy for the road ahead.

So, take heart, friend. You’ve got this — because He’s got you.
