Now that you are homeschooling, does it feel like suddenly, doubt is beginning to creep in, and like you're fighting battles on all sides? Well, let me tell you something I learned a while ago - the enemy only fights what he fears.
If you're facing resistance in your homeschooling journey, it's because your choice to homeschool matters and will most likely have a powerful impact in the kingdom of God as you raise your children to His glory. Your obedience to God's calling is a threat to the enemy's agenda.
So, if you find yourself in a season where it feels like everything is coming against you, stick around because today, we're going to talk about why the resistance that you are facing may not be a sign to quit but confirmation that you're on the right path, and why you should, more than ever before, dig your heals in and resolve to stay the homeschooling course long term. Grab your coffee or tea if you're a tea girl like me, and get ready to be inspired because I'm sure this episode will encourage you and give you the spark you need to stay the course.
Introduction.
Hello friends, this is Nadia. Welcome to another episode of Gift of Homeschooling, the place to be for tips, advice, and inspiration to create a successful life and long-term homeschool experience that you and your children will absolutely love.
Today, we're diving into a topic that will hopefully encourage you, empower you, and help you push through the challenges of homeschooling with a new perspective. If you've ever felt under attack—whether from self-doubt, outside criticism, or just plain exhaustion- I want you to know that your battle is not random. Like I said in the opener, the enemy fights what he fears, and let me tell you, he is absolutely terrified of what can be accomplished through the lives of your children and your family to the glory of God as you stay the course to homeschool long-term.
So, why does it sometimes feel like Homeschooling is an uphill battle? Why, when you take this beautiful step of faith to educate your children at home, do the doubts, fears, and obstacles seem to increase? Well, let's think about this for a second. If what you were doing had no impact—if it had no power—why would it be fought so hard?
There's a great quote that I first heard spoken by Pastor Kim Jones that says - thieves don't rob empty vaults. Likewise, as we homeschool our children, if our efforts were without worth, the enemy would not put any effort into his many attempts to get us to throw in the towel and give up on our homeschooling journey.
Let's look at a powerful verse from the Word of God in Deuteronomy 31:6 that says - "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you."
I love this verse because it reminds us that fear is a tactic, not a truth. The enemy wants you to believe that you're not capable, that you're failing your kids, and that you should give up and send them to traditional school. But the reason he's pressing so hard is that what you're doing is shaking his plans! Your children are being raised to know their God-given identity. They are being raised to know who they are in Christ and to know the Word of God. They are being raised to know that they are a royal priesthood set apart for God's glory. They are being taught the truth; they are being equipped for their purpose. That's a big deal!
Let me share a quick story. When I started homeschooling, I was hit with all kinds of opposition. First, from my family members who were convinced my choice to homeschool would be short-lived. Many people thought my choice was unwise and questioned how I could properly educate my children at home. Early in the journey, there was a season when my doubts were so loud in my head because I was listening to everyone else. I remember clearly coming to the realization one day that if the Lord had called me then He most definitely had equipped me with what I needed to homeschool my children. I also realized after getting quiet with God that He had great plans for my children and was reminded that He was the one who had called me to train up these children in the way that they should go because He had long ago predestined a purpose for them. I realized that if the enemy was fighting this decision so hard, the fruit at stake on the other side of my faithfulness must be tremendous.
This realization changed everything for me and reignited my commitment to staying the course long-term and raising my children as salt and light unto the Lord as I homeschooled them. I resolved during that I would commit wholeheartedly to staying the course long-term, and that is just what I did. Now, 18 years later, I am grateful to witness the tremendous fruits of our homeschool labor as I watch the strong, faith-filled boys my children have grown into.
And this brings me to one of my favorite stories in the Bible—Nehemiah rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem. Nehemiah was doing exactly what God had called him to do, yet he faced intense opposition. The moment he set out to rebuild, enemy after enemy showed up to distract, discourage, and ultimately try to stop him. They mocked him, they plotted against him, and they even tried to get him to come down from the wall. But Nehemiah refused to stop. In Nehemiah 6:3, he says, "I am doing a great work, and I cannot come down."
So, please know that, like Nehemiah—you are doing a great work, and you cannot come down. Like Nehemiah, you are building something that matters. Your Homeschooling is not just about teaching your children academically; it's about shaping hearts, building their character, preparing them for their God-given purpose, and raising them to His Glory. Of course, the enemy wants to stop you! But just like Nehemiah, you must stand firm and refuse to be distracted by doubt, criticism, or comparison.
So again, please realize that if you are facing challenges as you navigate the homeschool journey, the resistance you're facing is proof that what you're doing is powerful. And once you realize this and choose to stand against the schemes of the enemy, you will begin to walk victoriously and confidently in your calling to homeschool your children.
Now, how do we stay on the homeschooling course when we are facing doubt and feeling exhausted and discouraged? How do we stand firm when it feels like so much is coming against us and it is too much for us to bear? Here are five simple, practical tips that I have found to be most effective over my many years of Homeschooling:
First and foremost, make sure that you are taking time to be in God's presence and hear His voice. Get up early every morning, have time in His Presence, and pray for Him to guide and protect your Homeschool day. Start your day with prayer and supplication with thanksgiving for the gift of Homeschooling, and teach your children to do the same. Better yet, start each homeschool with your children with prayer and affirmations from the word of God. When we make His voice louder than any other voice, it will drown out the whispers of the enemy.
1. Recognize the attack for what it is. When you feel overwhelmed, when your kids are pushing the limits of your patience, when outsiders are questioning your choices—remind yourself, "This is happening because what I'm doing matters, and like I said at the beginning of the episode - the enemy only fights what he fears.
2. Speak life over your homeschool journey. The Bible says that life and death are in the power of the tongue. Stop saying, "I don't know if I can do this," and start declaring God, I know that you have called me and equipped me to homeschool my children. Declare that you are chosen, set apart, and anointed for the work of Homeschooling.
3. Stay rooted in your 'why'. I often say that you must know your why because this is what will motivate you to stay on the course when things get challenging. Remember why you started. Remember what led you to homeschool in the first place. And remember that even if it feels like the enemy is after disrupting your peace by throwing a wrench in your homeschool schedule, what he is ultimately after is the future of your children. He can only get it if you abandon your post and throw in the towel. So, stay focused on what truly matters.
4. Surround yourself with encouragement. Find a community that uplifts you. Be a part of the gift of the homeschooling community here, and make sure to plug in often to receive encouragement and inspiration from those of us who have gone before you on the homeschool journey.
Challenge for the Audience:
So, here's my challenge for you this week: Every time you feel discouraged, every time doubt creeps in, I want you to say out loud, The enemy only fights what he fears, and he is afraid of the impact my homeschool will have in the lives of my children, my family and the world at large. Declare with boldness – I will continue to homeschool my children to the glory of God to bring about a good harvest through the lives of my children. Declare it over your family, over your children, over yourself. Because the truth is, you are!
